Forum: GratefulDead Subject: "The Brent Meltdown Show"

Just finished listening to this one on Sirius XM. Its a pretty solid show, a good listen if your into this era of dead.
I had never heard of it before today, but apparently its known as the "Brent meltdown show". Just listen to do the Brent and Drummers jam>Maybe You Know after eyes and you'll know what i mean. Its a good jam but when brent starts singing Maybe you know it goes downhill. I think Jerry purposely comes out and goes into GDTRFB to put it to an end.

The next night the band plays Little Red rooster and Brent is back in rare form. He does his Red rooster rap and he is slurring all over the place

yea you can tell that even before jerry goes to GDTRFB that everyone wants it to end. I just heard it the other day, pretty rough shit.

I wasn't there, but what you say seems to be the generally accepted theory. The fact that there is then no drums or space supports that they were doing damage control. Poor Brent! It is painful to listen to ...

I've only listened to the Drums> Maybe You Know that you mentioned and the following Goin' Down The Road and Morning Dew.

So, Drums> Maybe is pretty hard to hear. But, Brent is out there with only some drummers. It would be hard for anyone to pull that off - he was getting nearly no support.

I don't think the rest of the band came back to save Brent, but simply came back from doing what ever they were doing. He sounds good on GDTR and Morning.

A "meltdown" seems harsh.

I agree, its bad but it isn't THAT bad. He was trying to give a heartfelt performance and it got a little out of hand.

don't you think its weird that their was no expected "space" segment? Leads me to believe Jerry and the guys sensed that something was up and went on stage to get into GDTRFB

Just guessing...

I think Brent hijacked what should have been Drums>Space. Jerry, Phil and Bob walked off stage as expected, but Brent stayed behind. The other guys may not of even known if they went to individual dresing rooms. The drummers had to do the best with what they were dealt.

When Jerry, Phil and Bob return for Space the probably don't know what to do. They don't want to step on Brent's toes - maybe he can get it together. Eventually they go into the song that would have come out of Space.

I take it as an experiment(by Brent) gone bad.

I think an interesting question is why Brent did this. Is it just that Brent is on something? Was he frustrated with the lack of minutes he was getting in the band?

I might be with you on this. As I alluded too in my previous post, no one was even trying to play the song. was it because of brent? was it because they weren't trying to play that song? If anything its a horrible grateful dead moment.

Poor Brent. Geez louise, get him some help. I hope he at least got a hug afterwards.

What's striking, though, is how he pulls it together (or SEEMS to) for GDTR, which is really kicking and where he's pretty front and center in a good way -- until the very end, where his singing is suddenly so out of it he seems about to melt down again. Which makes you realize how often band members (and other brilliant musicians, not just the Dead) could pull it together while playing, fake it, or otherwise just let the music come and put the pained and/or wasted brain aside for the moment. Brent had this brief moment when he suddenly couldn't do that, but I'm sure there were many, many other nights he was out of it and/or in pain ... just less obvious to the crowd.
